The Boston Children’s Museum created an original online curriculum about African culture and history for afterschool providers, to be housed with its other free downloadable units at www.bostonchildrensmuseum.org. The vision for this curriculum was to build Boston children’s awareness and appreciation for African cultures by capitalizing on the excitement about the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The museum developed five new curriculum activities, which were piloted in afterschool programs in the Boston area. All activities were created with feedback from experts in African culture. A celebration of African culture, “One Africa, Many Countries,” was hosted by the Boston Children’s Museum on June 11th and 12th. In the Fall of 2010, high schoolers from the Boston Public Schools and Noble & Greenough School will be trained in the curriculum. Several weeks later, they will go to the Boston Public Library to share these curriculums with children there.
