The Book Project, an educational component of World Cup Boston 2010 managed by the Boston Public Library and South Africa Partners, involves the acquisition of books written and illustrated by South Africans, unavailable elsewhere in the United States, which can be donated to BPL branches in the summer 2010. The books, of great literary and artistic merit, incorporate themes of justice, hope and renewal. Books can be purchased for one’s own use or donated, in the purchaser’s name, to a branch of the Boston Public Library.
The World Cup Boston 2010 Book Project promotes South African literacy and stimulates South African publishing, while offering Boston children a unique window onto a remarkable part of the world. The donation is made possible by the 30 – 50% margin of discounts offered by South African publishers. To date, South Africa Partners has sold more than 4,000 books and donated an equal number to schools in South Africa.
